Update Assignment 1C
Assignment 1A: Jorge J Rivera’s Leadership Practice
As a means of inspiring higher level performance within my office, I commit to offering more reinforcing feedback to members of my team within the office. Each day I will seek out one opportunity to
offer reinforcing feedback. I will reflect my new feedback behavior at the end of each day and will refine my behavior based on my reflection. I will do this for one full week.
- The team within the office has been very responsive. I have been asked for guidance on regular FHWA business questions and procedures. I have been able to provide feedback on whether or not they are on the right track as well as listen to ideas and provide my own opinion. If I think there was a misstep I guide them in the right direction without telling them what to do unless I am asked.
- In order to practice this leadership skill I had to talk to my team leader and discuss the assignment as well as my expectations and desired outcome. I also, identified the employees that would be helping me with the assignment. Once the employees were selected I had a conversation with them and asked them to ask me questions if they needed help. This part was easy, since they already did that in other occasion but I needed to let them know I was doing an assignment.
- Providing guidance can be a very rewarding experience, specially when you help someone else succeed. I enjoyed listening to other peoples thoughts and ideas and also enjoyed doing the research if I was asked a hard question and didn't know the answer. In the end the most rewarding was the satisfaction of knowing that I helped somebody else succeed.
2. I will leverage my strengths of Diplomacy and Open Mindedness as per the DISC model, to the benefit of problem-solving within my office and partnering activities. I will seek out at least one opportunity to do this each day and at the end of each day, I will evaluate my effectiveness in applying these strengths and find apply adjustments to be even more effective. I will do this for one full week."
- While on travel to my District in Florida I had the opportunity to practice diplomacy and open-mindedness. I was performing Program reviews and also attended Project development meetings. Instead of looking at files, pointing out faults and arriving at conclusions; I sat down with the respective project managers and discussed the purpose and objectives of the review. I also listened to their points of view and discussed decisions made during the projects delivery process. I noticed that as I was doing the introduction and explaining the purpose of the review, the Project managers were more at ease and felt better. This also made the review process more personable. They asked questions if they had any and I helped them understand.
- Diplomacy is an amazing tool to use while doing your job. Letting people express their points of view (even if you disagree) and have an open discussion will benefit the team and the outcome.
- I plan on consistently using diplomacy and listen (with an open mind) to what people have to say.
