Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action Simon Sinek Book: www.amazon.com/dp/B002Q6XUE4/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1TED Talk: youtu.be/sioZd3AxmnEIn his book, an his TED Talk, Simon Sinek discusses the importance of starting with "WHY" - your purpose for doing what you do. He applies this concept to businesses, teams, and movements to demonstrate how emphasizing purpose can inspire people to act. Some key takeaways for me were: The Golden Circle - place WHY at the center, then HOW, then WHAT. Start with WHY to make the most compelling case. Instead of starting with what you do, start with why you do it. Inspiration vs Manipulation - in AMP one of the key leadership qualities we talked about was inspiring others to action. Mr. Sinek draws a distinction between manipulation and inspiration, explaining that inspiration is more sustainable than manipulation, and in order to build trust and loyalty you should strive to inspire, not manipulate. People don't buy your WHAT, they buy your WHY - it doesn't matter how many new features your product has. The next person can and will quickly come along and improve upon your features. Your purpose is what sets you apart, and inspires people to buy, or act.

I just watched the TED talk, and I found it to be an interesting discussion. On one level, it gets at some very intrinsic levels of motivations when working with people. On another level, it seems to almost ignore the idea of communication and personality styles when working in teams. As we discussed in the DISC session, people can have very different expectations of how to be given information and bought into an idea. Some people want a lot of details and the reasoning behind things, others just want the headline. I suppose that "buying into the why" may be universal, but on the one on one level, how you do that may not be as simple as the TED talk suggests.

Hi Liz,
Very interesting TED talk! The concept of the "Golden Circle" which places WHY at the center is a great way to think about how best to motivate people to action. Interesting discussion that is a value for managers to focus on when leading a team.

Good points Steve. I think just like any tool or approach, it's worth considering when to use it. I recently used it in a meeting where we literally listed "what" and "how" as questions to answer about a process, and I asked, "what about why?". It helped remind me that that might be an important piece to remember to include when communicating complex ideas that require buy-in.
