September 19th, 2016 update 1:
While I did take my computer home with me over the weekend, I did not turn it on until 5:30 this morning. A relative success for me.
Bwana Jeff - I intend to use the 80/20 primarily at meetings, especially with my peers in the office. With the State I believe I am already near the 80/20 goal, but in the FHWA office not so much. The context is strictly limited to work, and meeting in particular except for those meeting I have too lead....Johnson
These are the two leadership related behaviors that I am committing to for the near future:
1. Follow the 80/20 principle to listening. That is to listen 80% of the time and speak 20% of the time
the source is according to the web: In 1906, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto created a mathematical formula to describe the unequal distribution of wealth in his country, observing that twenty percent of the people owned eighty percent of the wealth. In the late 1940's, Dr. Joseph M. Juran inaccurately attributed the 80/20 rule to Pareto, calling it Pareto's Principle. While it may be misnamed, can be a very effective tool to help you manage effectively
2. Manage my time and work life/balance more effectively. I will seek to work effectively at work and not work at home (on work) as has been my habit for the last 25 years.

I like your plan for applying the (misnamed) Pareto Principle to listening, Adam. Is this something you commit to doing every day or specifically in certain contexts? How will you measure the success you have with this as well as its impact? As for the not working at home commitment, are you saying you will stop bringing work home with you 100% henceforth? Good LP's! Good luck with them!

Oh boy Adam, those are some tough nuts to crack. I think you can do it though. What is your plan? How are you going to do it, to keep your focus on these things? I struggle with the work life balance a well. I enjoy work so much and I tend to let work take over so much of my time outside of work. Look at me, it is a sunday night at 921pm and I am in the office and responding to you. In my defense I put my kids to bed and then came in to work.
