What I learned from my AMP course was that most of our DISC assessments were dissimilar. Our DISC assessments emphasized, people have innate cultural perspectives, diverse educational backgrounds, unique character traits, and divergent value systems that affect how we process, interpret, and understand information. Some people thrive under pressure and others fall apart. Some people respond to straightforward talk and others shut down. In order to be an effective leader I must tailor my approach to people on an individual basis; therefore, I will execute this concept several times a day. My ability to approach people using this concept will play a big role in my ability to get the best work out of my teammates and coworkers. At the end of each day during my evening time, I will reflect on my daily interactions to ascertain if I am modulating my DISC characteristics to each individual. I will also appraise my ability to adapt to each person’s characteristics to see if it makes a difference in our relationship. After which I will evaluate my progress regarding approaching and dealing with people over a three-week period. Here I will see if I made any remarkable improvements with my relationships.

Michael, I agree. Approach is EVERYTHING when in a leadership role. Spending time knowing your teammates, partners is very important and very useful when determining an approach that will lead to successful results. Kudos to you for selecting this as a commitment!

Recently I read an article in Forbes. According to the article there are ten key qualities that every good leader must personify and emphasize. 1. Honesty 2. Delegation 3. Communication 4. Confidence 5. Commitment 6. Positive attitude 7. Creativity 8. Intuition 9. Inspire 10. Approach I tend to agree with the article and here is my take. Honesty is an obvious leadership trait. If a leader cannot be honest people cannot trust him/her, and without trust it is hard to get people to buy into your vision. Of course a leader must be able to delegate. A leader must be able to share his vision and then trust his/her team to complete the journey. Conversely, a micromanager saps the will of the people. Communication is essential, without good communications skills, it hard for a leader to deliver a message clearly and effectively. Confidence is not so clear, but without it, it is hard to get people to buy into the mission. Then there is a positive attitude, no one likes to being around a “Debbie Downer.” To add to a good attitude, is a sense of humor. Attitude and sense of humor go hand in hand. People, in addition, appreciate creativity. Creativity offers a fresh approach and is almost always what’s needed to get an old project moving again. To me intuition is the number one trait required of a leader. Good instincts are key when running a rough course. Good instincts most often lead to better outcomes. Without good instincts a leader relives mistakes over and over. A good leader must also be able to inspire people. By lifting people up, they can do more with less. Lastly there is approach, as we learned with our DISC assessment, a good leader approaches everyone differently and respects everybody’s viewpoint. If I were to add two additional qualities of a leader, then that would be accountability and enthusiasm. Accountability is mandatory. Acting ethically and responsibly is a must. You must try and always keep your word and try to never make promises you cannot keep. Other than accountability, maybe a little enthusiasm would be very helpful. Enthusiasm goes along with being able to inspire folks. Remember enthusiasm is contagious and people like to feel energized. Well this is maybe not the end all list to being a good leader, but it is a good start. Practice these daily and you will be on your way to being a more effective leader. www.forbes.com/sites/tanyaprive/2012/12/19/top-10-qualities-that-make-a-great-leader/#6a7f57ff3564

Good insights in both your original post and in the summary of the Forbes article. Salient points in relation to the DISC and other behavior type models. Looks like you have a good foundation to help on your pursuit of tailoring your DISC style to others.
