I gained many things from AMP and had many more "AH Ha!" moments. But two leadership behaviors that I would like to work on are process vs product and image/brand awareness. Both are vital to being a better leader, manager, and supervisor I think.
I will try to make time to step back and look at the process(es) for what I am doing and what I am working with my partners on. I want to reflect on how we are working together, how we are modifying the end product that we were trying to accomplish, and what if any any damage to relationships we are doing along the way. I also want to look for easier or more efficient ways of getting to that final product. During meetings with people on my team and with my partners I will listen more and look at the process, while keeping the end product in mind.
My personal image and brand is something that I was turned onto 3 years ago and it is something that I have tried to improve but very passively. I want to work on it more proactively and more aggressively. I believe that image is important and perception is reality. As we all know you only get one chance to make a first impression and many times our image is that first impression. I will work on being more conscious of my actions and appearances. Thinking before I speak and act. This is something I have been told to since I was a kid and now I will finally make it a priority. I once asked a county engineer in rural Illinois why he wore a suit to work everyday. He relayed a situation to me about two men walking down the street, one dressed in a suit and one dressed in shabby holey clothes. He then asked me which man I would follow. I knew the answer to that question.
I am worried about how much of a change I will be able to enact in 3 weeks but certainly in 3 months, and even 6 months, I expect to see large improvement in myself in these areas.
