How's it going allies? It was nice working and talking with all of you last week. I look forward to continuing that relationship into the future. It's kind of funny that Scott and Julian are in my allies group because when it comes to FHWA, my relationship with the two of you is by far the longest. I met (and lived) with Julian as an intern with EFLHD, and Scott was my desk mate when I started the PDP in Georgia. Liz, sorry for the small talk. I know it's not a characteristic of a D (which I am), but I figured it'd be good practice for my communication skills! Assignment 1: Leadership Practices I commit to assessing my interactions with two individuals (one in the work place, one outside) on a daily basis. I will assess these interactions on how my High D and Secondary I and S personality worked and adapted to my perceived thought of their DISC personality. I will do this every day for one week, then write what I perceived as my greatest strengths and weaknesses during these interactions. I will continue doing the same thing for an additional week, with the thought of working and building my weakness and leveraging my strengths. I commit to developing a form of the Drexler/Sibbet Team Performance Model for the NE Division Engineering Team. Currently the Division is at 1 of 3 transportation engineers and developing a model that will identify team goals and roles and how we will get there should give the team a more clear direct purpose instead of the team performing as several individuals each trying to accomplish their own agenda or going off the many items of our unit plan. I will, with the review of my team leader and ADA, answer the questions of "Why are we here? Who are we? What are we doing? and How will we do it?". I will complete this task within the next month.

Cody, I responded to you but it seems it just disappeared. Anyways, it was nice to see you again and meet you other half . I am glad we got to share time during this training and open our minds to the upcoming opportunities. I will be interested in hearing about your observations betweenn the interactions with both individuals you have selected. The second commitment seems a bit ambitious in the amount of time you have set, but you know you Division better, and you are a D so get it done. Good luck using the skills and techniques learned to effectively coach and maximize you goal. Julian

Way to go Cody:) Go for it! I think these are great goals.
For the first: -Consider the commitment for different people. -Consider reducing the frequency to make it a little easier for you. -Consider letting the folks that you will interact with know your goal. Then ask them for their feedback. They may assess your strengths/weakness differently from you. -Good job!
For the second: -Sounds great. No comments other than it sounds like a great goal.

Cody,
Sorry I'm a little behind. I hope you are having success with these so far!
I really like your first practice goal, keeping in mind that your strengths may present themselves differently in different situations (work and home). I've done something similar, but instead of writing, I had a "debrief" with myself in the car on the way home, and I recorded a voice memo of myself talking about what went well, and what could be better. You could consider this if you find yourself pressed for time but wanting to continue the practice.
Your second practice sounds like a great practical way to apply the concept. I was also inspired to look at my teams differently once I could see the steps that teams go through.
Looking forward to reading your updates!

Welp... my greatest strength relates directly to my biggest weakness when it comes to DISC communication. I've never realized how direct I am in some situations at work and depending on the situation this is a big pro or con. It can lead to immediate action and getting work done in some situations, but I've noticed it has been perceived as overly blunt and rude in others. I was in a Standards Plan Committee Meeting the other day (this meeting discusses possible changes to the standard plans), and it seemed out of the group of 10 engineers there was one I, one D (myself) and 8 Cs. The D and I talked back and forth quite a bit, were open and direct about their thoughts, didn't question too much if they were right or wrong before they spoke, but just wanted the others to take their thoughts into mind and consider them. The Cs started sharing their input shortly after a question was brought up by the D and I in the room and it led to a lot of great conversation and quite a few changes were made.
I've always known I like to be the one in charge, and most situations I take the chief role quite quickly...common for a D. The past few weeks I've sat back and let others take over. This was a great experience when I spent a weekend helping a group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. We were given several tasks to complete, but it was my job to let them figure out how to solve those tasks and just be there for help. Sometimes it was extremely hard not put in my two cents (because of course I wanted my group to win), but I just sat back and encouraged them in what they were doing instead of telling them what to do. It was a great experience.... Conversations with kids is a great way to work on your DISC communication for me too because I know I have to be more patient.
My other commitment hasn't gone as well. I have talked to my ADA and Team Leader about setting up team goals and a purpose, but change has happened! My TL accepted a new position and I've been involved in training a new TE in the office. I really want my teams purpose and goals to come from the whole team, so I think this might need to be delayed some. I want several fully invested players, not just me to dominate the thoughts and discussion.
